SCHOOL-TO-SUCCESS

Research and Development--The School-To-Success Model

Dr. Moses McCutcheon, Jr. developed the School-To-Success model in 2001 in response to the need for career guidance, counseling, planning and coaching for at-risk middle school to high school students. Although the program was designed for youth and adults, current research indicates that middle school to high school students (ages 12-18) will receive the most benefit. This program targets individuals who do not know what they want to be or do after graduation. Recent research indicates that the counselor-student ratio is too high in our school system and very little work is being done in the areas of career planning and development. McCutcheon’s 2001 model is a computer-based career development program with special emphasis on the discovery of one’s life purpose. The program was used and pilot tested for more than 2 years with a wide variety of participants, including an age range of 4-92, diverse ethnic and racial groups, and students with different abilities, ranging from those who planned to enter the work force as soon as they graduated from high school, through those who wanted vocational training, to students who were planning to go to college and universities. The School-To-Success program consists of the following eight steps:

1.  Step One—Develop Basic Computer Skill.

2.  Step Two—Discover Your Purpose in Life (Mission).

3.  Step Three—Explore Education and Career Opportunities.

4.  Step Four—Identify Skills.

5.  Step Five—Create a "Things You Love to do" Inventory.

6.  Step Six—Develop a Résumé.

7.  Step Seven—Do Practice Interviews.

8.  Step Eight—Creating an Education and Career Plan for Future Success.

The course ran from 2 to 4 months. Classes lasted for 2 hours and were held in schools, churches, and community-based organizations. Class size was limited to 15 students. An individualized, self-paced, hands-on, interactive, technology-enhanced instructional method was used. Before, during, and after classes began, students filled out questionnaires to assess the course. School-To-Success specializes in discovering dreams and turning them into missions and achievable goals. The School-To-Success program is offered at School sites by the School-To-Success Foundation. Teachers are trained by McCutcheon Research Corporation.
